Travie McCoy – Former member of Gym Class Heroes, who also battled addiction, is now focusing on his solo career; still making music and just performed at Vans Warped Tour. I guess you could say he went back to his teenage pop-punk roots by playing in Mountain view, CA on the final show of Vans Warped Tour, everyone has a home at Warped, and Linette’s photos show just that below. Remember, recovery is possible – Cristine

On the last day of Warped Tour in Mountain View, CA The Camera Affect Promotions had the honor of sitting down with Philadelphia rapper Whitney Peyton. With her yellow pineapple pinata in tow, we discussed everything from headlining tours and released albums to the rap industry and being an independent artist. Check out the interview below:

TCAP: What was your first reaction when you found out that Warped Tour was ending?
WP: It felt like a new chapter I guess, because Warped Tour is a very nostalgic thing, so it was just one more thing cementing that I was not a kid anymore, so that’s kind of sad. This is why I have things like this (holds up a pineapple pinata) to keep me childish. I think Warped Tour is just a big staple in the music scene so it definitely felt like the end of an era.
TCAP: And what did it feel like when you were invited back to play the last Warped Tour?
WP: I was surprised because I didn’t know it was going to happen again, they resurrected it. I was stoked to be playing it because I did play last year which was the final one where they did the full tour and I just had no idea that I was going to have the chance to do it. I was like “okay it’s over, I won’t get the chance.” It was kind of a bucket list thing to do, you know, and then being invited back this year made me feel like they liked me last year, they must have liked something, I did something right which is rare, so yeah it felt really good.
TCAP: Well that’s good!
WP: “It was terrible, why am I here, I hate it.” Don’t do that, don’t make that the clickbait, I’m going to be looking for the title.
TCAP: I will not make that the clickbait, I promise I won’t make that the clickbait. So last year was your first headlining tour, correct?
WP: Yes! Full country headlining tour.
TCAP: I know you toured with Twiztid before. How did that feel going from a supporting act to a headlining act ?
WP: It was so weird because you know what, besides Twiztid I’ve done over a dozen national tours and I’ve toured with Three Six Mafia, Cottonmouth Kings, acts like Blood On The Dance Floor, so yeah, I’ve even done shows with Borns of Osiris and that’s super heavy for me to be on. I’ve always been such an eclectic like, every single lane, because when you see me they don’t know where to put me, booking agents don’t know where to put me. They’re like ‘okay here’s this rap-rock chick, what can we put her with,’ so I end up going out with everybody which is awesome, but at the same time when I went to headline I was like ‘oh my god, what’s this going to be like?’ Is this going to be like a melting-pot type of all different people which would be dope, but then I’m hoping that they’re able to mesh together and not just be segregated like the high school kids tables. Like those are the Juggalos and those are the punk kids and I just want everyone to kind of mesh, but luckily with the way music is going now with everything being a fusion, with MGK being rock-rap and Yungblud being like an emo-rap-rock thing it’s kind of like blurred lines and there’s no rules anymore.
TCAP: Did you find that people don’t take you seriously as a female in a predominantly male dominated industry?
WP: Yeah of course, I mean my DJ is a girl and I work with Gina over here who’s also a girl if you can’t tell. I work with a lot of women and I think it’s kind of like, I even tell these guys, on my set when I come out, I make sure I don’t even step onto the stage until I’m actually rapping so I don’t even show myself until I’m doing my vocals so they’re being hit with that at the same time so they have no time do prejudge what it’s going to sound like, they can only go off of what’s happening right there. Yeah you’ve got to prove yourself a lot more. A lot of people think it’s an advantage because you’re the only chick, so everyone gravitates toward it because it’s different, but being a girl can make them interested in it, it’s not going to make them stay. The music is going to make them stay, so that’s what we want, the ones that stay.
TCAP: And you were primarily an independent artist but you were just signed to Tragic Hero Records, correct?
WP: Correct. I did my last album Iridescent with Tragic Hero with Warner Brothers Distribution but my next album is going to be independent again. It was cool, it was like this metal label so that was dope. I just like being independent. I wanted to try something new with them and they did awesome for me. I charted on Billboard, I was Top 10 in rap albums first week. We were on Heat Seekers, like 4,200 copies first week and that’s pretty crazy in a day and age where everything is digital because most of them were physical albums, so I’m blown away by that.
TCAP: Is there anything that drove you more towards being an independent artist?
WP: I’m a control freak! Yeah, I just don’t like being told when I can drop things and being told this is who’s producing you and this is who’s writing your songs. I write all my songs. I’m up to co-write songs with people and stuff but no one can tell my story. I want it to feel genuine to the fans. The type of fans that I have currently I’m so thankful for and it’s because I connect with them and I don’t want to risk losing that connection by having someone else write what I’m saying.
TCAP: Yeah, you want to keep the authenticity.
WP: I think it’s achievable to do both. I think a lot of people believe that you have to have these writers and you have to have these producers to be able to have a breakthrough song or something and I just completely disagree. I think maybe it’ll be harder because you have to get the platform yourself and you’re not just grabbing their platform but I think the genuine stuff will shine through at the end.
TCAP: Last year you released your sophomore album, Iridescent. What was the process like going into writing your second album that was different from writing your first?
WP: Man, the thing is that I tour so much. The last couple years I was touring like ten months out of the year so the Firecracker album I did in like eight days or something like that. The Iridescent album was pretty similar in the sense that we did it in less than two weeks. Sometimes that makes me upset because I like to take time to write and sometimes I’m like, it captured a moment in time, so it was a snapshot of a moment in time. As much as sometimes I’m like, ‘I wish I had more time to do the album,’ I’m the kind of person where if you give me too much time it’ll just never come out because I’ll be like no we can make this better, no we can do this, no we’ve got to change this and it’ll just never end up coming out because no one is forcing me to put it out. In a way there’s got to be a middle ground where I have a little bit more time for the next one but someone is still giving me a deadline so I’m not like, ‘no we can make it better,’ ‘no let’s rewrite it,’ because it’ll just never come out dude.
TCAP: What has been the most difficult part of your career so far? Have you ever questioned if this is really what you want to do?
WP: I’ve never questioned if it’s what I want to do because it’s a great release but I think the hardest part is that I have a lot of anxiety especially being on tour, which you wouldn’t think because I tour so much, but I do have a social anxiety a lot of times so it’s difficult at times to be surrounded by people and also in the genre I’m in I feel like everything is competitive, like there’s a competitive air around hip-hop. I especially like playing Warped Tour because I think a lot of the rock dudes are just kind of more laid back and like ‘yeah we’re in it together,’ and I wish hip-hop was a little more like that. Hip-hop stems from the era of battling and battle raps and it still has a lot of that sense about it where everything is like ‘I have a better car than you, I have a hotter girlfriend than you,’ you know, so sometimes it gets really tiring feeling like you have to step out with this confidence that you might not always have.
TCAP: They try and one up each other.
WP: Right, and that’s pretty exhausting.
TCAP: Alright last one. I know since they announced that this was going to be the last hurrah for Warped Tour a couple of smaller pop up tours have been touring the country. Do you think that there’s ever going to be anything like Warped Tour again or do you think that this is kind of it to this level?
WP: I definitely think we’re it to this level because we’re in such a digital age and every festival is getting smaller I think. You have a lot of artists touring too because they’re not making as much money digitally, so they’re touring to make up for it. You have so many options so you’re like ‘oh I could see this person tonight or this person or this person, they’re all coming through town.’ Before it would be like ‘this is the show we’re all going to.’ I think Warped was kind of bigger when it was more about being there and now it’s like ‘well we can watch it on YouTube.’ I mean there’s nothing that’s ever going to replace the sense of a live show, but I do think that’s going to be on a smaller scale unfortunately.
TCAP: I know Kevin (Lyman) has said that he’s kind of hoping that someone steps up and takes the reigns for Warped Tour, do you think that will happen?
WP: I think people will step up and try and do something similar but I don’t think nothing will ever be able to imitate it, you know what I’m saying? I think it’ll happen, I hope it happens, so we can keep it going and keep it punk-rock.

Well, here’s the year that any pop-punk kid has been dreading for the last 25 years- the very end of Vans Warped Tour. For a quarter of a century VWT has been a haven and a ‘punk rock summer camp’ for “outcasts,” “misfits” and those who were seen as “too different.” From sky rocketing the careers of bands like All Time Low and Neck Deep to giving back to the community in the form of blood drives and canned goods collections, VWT has been a quintessential part of life not only for the bands and the behind the scenes crew but for the fans as well.
With VWT kicking off their anniversary events in Cleveland, Ohio at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, a sold out and super successful start to the summer, the following stops span over two weekends, June 29th and 30th in Atlantic City, New Jersey and July 20th and 21st in Mountain View, California. With all of our Warped-Tourian knowledge and our inner scene teens sobbing over the end of era, we’ve created a list of the top 13 bands you must see this summer.
1. Dance Gavin Dance
Hailing from Sacramento, California rock band Dance Gavin Dance never fail to put on a killer show. First appearing in 2009 and doing four runs on the tour the group have performed their hits such as “We Own the Night” off their 2015 album Instant Gratification and “Betrayed By the Game” off 2016s Mothership. With the release of Artificial Selection just last year, one of their best albums in my opinion, you definitely won’t want to miss “Suspended In This Disaster” or “The Rattler” live (really crossing my fingers that they play them.)
Inspire The Liars- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-aQrBZ4Duw
Pennsylvania metal-core band August Burns Red has been delivering hit after hit since the bands creation in 2003. Completing 7 summers on the Vans Warped Tour the band have given us consistent powerful vocals, spine tingling guitar riffs and have expressed nothing but gratitude and love towards their fans. With the band hitting the stage for one final VWT show fans are hoping for a mix of hits such as 2011s “Carpe Diem,” 2015s “Separating the Seas” and 2017s “King of Sorrow.”
The Frost- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKlP2rKtAGQ
Maryland based rock band Good Charlotte, formed in 1995 by brothers Joel and Benji Madden, has been giving us all of our rock medicine for years on end. With hits like “The Anthem” and “Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous” both off the 2002 album The Young and the Hopeless we’re definitely in for a treat and with tracks pulled from the 2018 record Generation Rx fans will most certainly get the perfect mix of old and new.
Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-jC3H_8Dk4
Starting in 1997 the Floridian ska-punk band has played VWT a mind blowing 13 times. Getting to experience tracks such as “The Rest of My Life” and “Sunstroke” from a band that helped create and shape Warped Tours’ legacy is definitely something that everyone should take advantage of. Even if you can’t stay for their full set, and trust me you’ll be disappointed if you don’t, make sure to drop by and catch at least one song from the energetic and crowd thrilling band.
The Science of Selling Yourself Short- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krXG307d4k8
Playing Vans Warped Tour for their fifth time, Texas metalcore band Memphis May Fire are coming to light up the stage once again. Memphis May Fire always delivers and never fails to have a wave of crowd surfers and mosh pits rocking out to hits such as “Sleepless Nights” and “The Enemy.” If you’ve never moshed before, I highly suggest taking the gloves off and experiencing your first mosh pit to a Memphis May Fire song.
Heavy Is the Weight- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUfkqYWxLjk
Florida pop-punk band Set It Off is a fairly new band to the scene but their fan base has been growing rapidly since their debut at VWT in 2013. The band signed to Fearless Records in 2018 and released their fourth album Midnight in February of this year. Fans can most likely expect a range of tracks from over the years (really hoping “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” makes it onto the setlist) but regardless of which songs they play, a Set It Off performance is something you don’t want to miss.
Why Worry- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sesKiKYQn84
Rock band Silverstein, hailing from Ontario has played VWT 10 times, starting back in 2004. With a mix of rock, post-hardcore, metal core and indie-rock vibes the versatile band is one that absolutely is a can’t miss. Whether it be their heavier songs like “Live To Kill” off of the 2011 album Rescue or the more pop-punk sounding “The Afterglow” off of 2017s Dead Reflection there’s no denying that Silverstein, while continuing to bring in the sounds of their roots, is one of the most adaptable and ever changing bands in the scene.
Ghost- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqDR4TW2vfs
Alternative rock band Sleeping With Sirens from Florida emerged on the scene in 2009, playing their first Warped Tour in 2012 and going on to play another 5 years after that. With five incredibly successful albums and a sixth one in the making Sleeping With Sirens has no shortage of hits ranging from “If I’m James Dean, You’re Audrey Hepburn” and “If You Can’t Hang” to “We Like It Loud” and “Empire to Ashes.” If you’re in the mood for an engaged and incredibly hyped up crowd singing back the lyrics to an equally hyped up band, Sleeping With Sirens is a band you’re not going to want to miss.
If You Can’t Hang- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UwWYtLWEZg
If there’s a band that radiates scene energy the most, it’s definitely Utah’s own The Used. Having played VWT 8 times, the first being in 2002 the band has become one that everyone knows at least one song to, even if you don’t know the name of the band. The post-hardcore/alternative rock band has enticed fans with tracks like “Pretty Handsome Awkward” and “Rise Up Lights,” and the mix of old school and new school that this band is going to bring to the stage is going to result in a show for the books.
All That I’ve Got- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tgB_JwcuPg0
Another Ontario band that’s played VWT 10 times is Sum 41, the first time being in 2000. With six albums previously released holding two of their most popular songs “In Too Deep” and “Fat Lip,” the band is set to drop their seventh album Order in Decline on July 19, just one day before they’re set to play Warped Tour. The release of the new album is bound to get fans hyped up and eager to learn the words to the newest songs so they can belt them out along with the guys giving it their all on stage.
In Too Deep- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emGri7i8Y2Y
England’s Dominic Harrison, known to his fans as Yungblud is set to make 2019 his second consecutive year on the VWT. The energy he exudes on stage and the sheer poetry of his lyrics makes it hard not to love Yungblud and want to listen to his songs on repeat. His debut album 21st Century Liability which was dropped last year features tracks such as “Medication,” “Psychotic Kids” and “Polygraph Eyes” and recently he released a successful collaboration with artists Halsey and Travis Barker titled “11 Minutes.” If there’s one artist you want to keep your eye on, it’s Yungblud.
Medication- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rM1shsSRqB8
This pop-punk Floridan band has done nothing but continue to grow their fanbase from their debut in 2005 to their first VWT in 2008 up to now. With eight Warped Tour summers under their belt the band has had no shortage of catchy hits going back from “Check Yes Juliet” on their self-titled album released in 2007 to 2013s “I Feel Alive.” We The Kings never fails to put on a fantastic show and you can genuinely see and feel the love that they have for their music and their fans.
Check Yes, Juliet- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5CUyWJ7UINM
Rounding out our list is Montreal originated pop-punk powerhouses Simple Plan. Playing VWT first in 1999 and going on to take on to dedicate an additional 12 summers. Bangers like “Addicted” and “I’m Just a Kid” were, and still are, staples in every scene kids music rolodex. The vibes, riffs and vocals that Simple Plan gives off for every performance are insane and time and time again they remain incredibly humble and thankful for their fans. There’s no doubt in my mind that Simple Plan was one of the best choices to add to the end of an era and if you miss Simple Plan’s set, you’re missing out entirely.

The last cross-country Vans Warped Tour takes place this summer from 6/21-8/5. The tour will start in California and end in Florida. Being that this is the last cross-country tour, fans expected the lineup to be nothing short of amazing. Kevin Lyman really delivered with this lineup. It is a fantastic way to end the tour with a bang.
The lineup features bands from across a wide range of genres within the scene. Some of my personal favorites will be making an appearance on the final run of the tour. There are a few bands on the lineup set to only play a few dates including my favorite band, All Time Low (A little bitter I won’t be able to see them).
Some are not a fan of the lineup saying most of the bands they want to see aren’t playing their date. Others such as, TCAP member Emily Sulkowski, said “I’m ready to have the sweatiest, rowdiest, best day ever.” She also went on to say, “I love the lineup so much and I think it’s gonna attract younger and older fans alike.” I totally agree with Emily but also agree that more bands should be playing the full tour.
You can see bands and artists all the way from pop punk band, State Champs all the way to the death metal band, Nekrogoblikon (trust me I never heard of them either, but I’m intrigued). Some warped tour staples such as Taking Back Sunday, Sum 41, Reel Big Fish, and Less than Jake will be making appearances on the tour which really takes the tour back to its roots. Less than Jake has been on the tour since 1997 and this summer will be their 10th time appearing on the tour! It’s exciting to see a mix of new bands and older bands all coming together to make this last tour one for the books.
Thank you, Kevin Lyman, for all that you have done to bring this scene together every summer. I am sad to see the tour go but I am happy that it happened. It was the first place I ever photographed a concert and it will forever hold a special place in my heart for that. Looking back on where I started to where I am now, without warped tour I never would’ve gotten here.
