Monumentour | July 18, 2014

Hey y’all!

Only one word comes to mind when I think about Monumentour: incredible. I had the privilege of seeing New Politics, Paramore and Fall Out Boy on July 18th at Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, Maryland. The three bands have been playing arenas and will continue to play all summer. A tour with Paramore and Fall Out Boy has been long awaited in the music world and the groups did not disappoint.

New Politics, a band originally from Denmark, has been playing what they consider to be punk and alternative rock music since 2009. Although the three piece group knows what it feels like to headline shows and play festivals, lead singer David Boyd told the crowd they still feel so privileged to be opening for Fall Out Boy and Paramore. Fun fact: Pete Wentz recently signed New Politics to his record label Decaydance, along with Lolo.

The group opened with “Give Me Hope”, followed by”Berlin”, “Fall Into These Arms”, “Just Like Me” and “Tonight You’re Perfect”. Boyd sang “Fall Into These Arms” while standing on the crowd, and the transition between “Fall Into These Arms’ and “Just Like Me” featured his insane break-dancing and signature headstand.  About halfway through “Tonight You’re Perfect”, the band began playing a cover of Panic! At the Disco’s Miss Jackson, featuring Lolo. At this point, a majority of the crowd was on its feet, full of energy and ready to sing along with the band’s hit single “Harlem”. Their sent went off without a hitch, featuring many jokes, one regarding the fact that the band’s current drummer, Louis Vecchio, is the only American in the band. New Politics closed their set with a song called “Yeah Yeah Yeah” off their first album.

Paramore’s set started with “Still Into You”, which is one of their biggest songs, hitting #24 on Billboard’s top 100. Out of ten songs that have been on Billboard’s top 100, only one song has hit number one.  The band is currently comprised of Haley Williams, Jeremy Davis and Taylor York, and the touring addition of Aaron Gillespie, Justin York and Jon Howard. The band started making music in 2004, when they put out their first album All We Know is Falling through Atlantic records. This tour has been recognized as a comeback tour because the band has been through so much, including the loss of two lead members in 2011. Haley’s neon outfit and strong stage persona alongside York’s high energy guitar riffs carried the band through “That’s What You Get,” “For a Pessimist, I’m Pretty Optimistic,” “Ignorance,” and a slower paced, less optimistic “Decode.” The band slowed it down to play “The Only Exception” complete with cell phone lights shining all around the pavillion and “Last Hope,” to speed things up again with “Brick by Boring Brick,” “Misery Business” followed by the very drum heavy “Let the Flames Begin” and “Part ll.” Paramore closed their set with “Proof” and only #1 Billboard hit, “Ain’t it Fun.” Hopefully Jeremy Davis’s hernia feels much better soon!

Fall Out boy went on stage at 9:30, and even though it was late, no one was tired quite yet. This is the second time I have seen Fall Out Boy since they came off of their 3 year hiatus in February of 2013. They began their set with the 1st song off their latest album Save Rock and Roll called “The Phoenix,” followed by some older songs, “The Take Over, the Break’s Over,” “A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More Touch Me” and “This Ain’t a Scene, it’s an Arms Race.” Bassist Pete Wentz’s stage banter led us into Alone Together, Death Valley and the certified triple platinum song “Sugar, We’re Going Down.”

The band went on to play “Miss Missing You,” a fan favorite “Young Volcanoes” and an old but still extremely popular “Dance, Dance.” Then they played “Just One Yesterday” and my favorite song off of their first album Take This to Your Grave, “Grand Theft Autumn,” continuing on with a cover of “We Are the Champions.”   The show was equipped with pyrotechnics and Wentz and guitarist Joe Trohman played a part of the set in the middle of the arena, between the lawn seats and the pavilion seats. The show must go on and it of course did, with a killer rendition of “Save Rock and Roll,” followed by the oh-so-sassy “I Don’t Care” and closing their set with “My Songs Know What You Did in The Dark.” The band came back on for their encore to play their high energy “Thanks fr th Mmrs” and the same song they always close with, which is an absolute classic, “Saturday”! My personal favorite part of the show was when Pete was throwing beach balls at Andy for a good couple of minutes while he was trying to drum. They are such a great live band and I hope that some of you have had the chance to see them live!

Queen & Adam Lambert take on New York City

Thursday, July 17th Queen & Adam Lambert performed at Madison Square Garden. This is was another show apart of their North American Tour. Amazing effects including lights, fog machines and many props left the packed arena cheering for more. Starting with a dropped curtain and the silhouette of Adam Lambert the show only went up from there. Original members Brian May and Roger Taylor made sure the crowd didn’t forget how Freddie Mercury and the rest of the band became rock gods. Using the oval screen placed behind the stage they included Freddie Mercury heavily into the show including backstage clips from their life on the road when they first started out and a tribute to the late Mercury. It was clear Adam Lambert wasn’t trying to be Freddie Mercury but he put his own twist on the vocals of the classic songs. During Bohemian Rhapsody once again showed Freddie this time he was singing the song and Adam Lambert sang with them. During the show Brian May shed some tears when doing a solo he would have normally done with Freddie. He encouraged the audience to sing along and the whole arena was in awe. While Adam was backstage doing one of many costume changes Brian and Roger brought out the people of the band who helped to make the show what it was including Rogers son. They did an acoustic song which proved to be one of the highlights of the night. Roger and his son also participated in a drum battle which showed both of their amazing talents. Roger also sang which proved he was more than just an amazing drummer. Adam Lambert’s performance was fantastic. The notes he hit gave me chills, so did his charming personality. He made sure he talked to the crowd and connected to them. His use of props also was a great choice. During Killer Queen he had his own couch where he laid and drank champagne, which he later shared with the audience. His costumes were exciting too they ranged from a simple vest, t-shirt and jeans to a leopard suit with a crown fit for a king. The show closed with an encore of We Are The Champions, We Will Rock You and tons of confetti and fog.

The fans at the show were truly special. Most of the arena was an older crowd but that didn’t stop them from cheering and applauding like crazy. One women sitting in front of me was telling me about the times she had seen Adam and  I shared my own concert experiences while seeing him. The crowd as a whole was very comforting and kind. Lines for the merch table were long which was to be expected. I waited till the end to get a shirt which was a bad idea, my size was sold out. Overall this concert was a once in a life time experience. I feel like i witnessed history being made. I can only hope that after all this Adam Lambert finally gets the credit from this generation of how amazing and talented he is. If they come back to New York or around here it is in your best interest to go.

A Concert for Casey at the Baltimore Soundstage ft All Time Low

Hey y’all!

This past Saturday I had the privilege to go to All Time Low’s hometown acoustic charity show, An Evening with All Time Low: A Concert for Casey at the Baltimore Soundstage. It was my first time at the venue, and I have to say I loved it. Think classy grunge: cement floors, a bar running along the side wall and chandeliers that looked totally out of place. Three local alt bands opened for All Time Low ; 3 PM, Cinder Wall and Like You to Me. Fun fact: the lead singer of Cinder Wall is Alex Gaskarth’s girlfriend’s brother.

All Time Low opened with Backseat Serenade, leading into Damned If I Do Ya, Do It For Baltimore, Somewhere in Neverland and Time Bomb. The crowd was pretty intense for an acoustic show! Everyone was pushing and shoving to the front, but luckily there was no crowd surfing to worry about.

The four piece pop punk band went on to play some of its slower songs off their earlier albums, Running From Lions, Lullabies, Jasey Rae, Remembering Sunday and Therapy. I don’t think I have ever seen as many emotional breakdowns at a concert as I did that night. Eventually, Casey’s father, Paul Leavitt, came on stage with the band to perform Jimmy Eat World’s Hear You Me in honor of his son. All Time Low also played The Reckless and The Brave, Weightless, and closed their show as they normally do, with Dear Maria, Count Me In, although this time it was an acoustic rendition. The show went smoothly as usual, and the guy who really likes Circles made himself known that night, unfortunately way too many times.

Overall, it was a great show for a great cause. The band raised $18,000 for the Center for Infant and Child Loss.

The Vamps take on New York City

Wednesday night, the upcoming British band The Vamps did their first ever headlining show at Gramercy Theater in New York City. The band is made up of Bradley Simpson, James McVey, Tristan Evans, and Connor Ball. Over 500 people waited outside in the cold and rain to be able to see the boys at their first ever concert in the United States.

AJR Brothers opened for The Vamps. They got the crowd moving with some of their singles, like “I’m Ready” and “Livin’ on Love”.

The Vamps came on singing “Wildheart” their new single just released here in the United States. They also sang a few new unreleased songs, and even did a cover of “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers. The show was full of energy, and Mr. Evans may have even kissed Mr. Simpson on his cheek during one of the songs.

The concert overall was amazing, and I had such an amazing time. It’s crazy to see a band that you’ve been watching on YouTube since the beginning, live for the first time. I’m incredibly proud of these boys and can’t wait to see where they go from here.

Were any of you at the show? If not, make sure to check out the band’s single “Wildheart” on iTunes and check them out on twitter @TheVampsBand

Thank you for all of your continued support
